Notre Dame Stadium is the home football stadium for the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, one of the most celebrated college football teams in history. The stadium opened its gates in 1930 with a seating capacity of 54,000.
In 1997, 21,000 new seats were added to Notre Dame Stadium, bringing the seating capacity to the present 80,795. Notre Dame Stadium is know for its "Touchdown Jesus", a nickname given to a large mural of Jesus looming over the stadium with his arms raised to signify a touchdown, rather than the traditional outstretched pose.
